FIU Recognizes BSI Researchers at the 2016 Faculty Convocation and Awards Ceremony

The Biomolecular Sciences Institute would like to congratulate its faculty members who were recognized at the 2016 Faculty Convocation and Awards Ceremony. Awards were given in recognition of excellence in the areas of teaching, research, service, engagements, mentoring, advising and more. The awardees are:


Dr. Fernando Noriega, Professor, Biology, College of Arts, Sciences & Education

Faculty Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Activities

Research Interests: Physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genomics and proteomics to study mosquito’s physiological processes such as digestion, activity of the endocrine system and hormonal and nutritional regulation of gene expression.


Dr. Sharan Ramaswamy, Assistant Professor, Biomedical Engineering, College of Engineering & Computing

Faculty Award For Excellence in Advising and Mentorship

Research Interests: Heart valve tissue engineering, cardiovascular mechanobiology and heart valve disease. Current translational projects including using engineered valvular tissues derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells for valve repair and the use of decellularized bioscaffolds for valve replacement in pediatric patients.


Dr. Chenzhong Li, Associate Professor, Biomedical Engineering, College of Engineering & Computing

President’s Council Worlds Ahead Faculty Award (2nd place)

Research Interests: Nanobioengineering & Bioelectronics: Interface with analytical chemistry and cellular electronics, bio-nano conjugations, functional material synthesis and characterization, and device fabrication.
